While SlimFast is a major diet brand that’s been popular in the US since the ‘90s, their products have been labeled more recently as unhealthy, due to the high amounts of sugar and artificial ingredients in them. Due to this, SlimFast has revamped their brand, adding new product lines that meet current health demands… and one of them is a line of keto products.

FLAVORS / TASTE
SlimFast Keto Shakes come in three flavors: Fudge Brownie Batter, Vanilla Cake Batter and Creamy Coffee Cappuccino. For the purpose of this SlimFast Keto Review, we’re going to take a look at the Vanilla Cake Batter shake flavor.
User reviews show that people either love or strongly dislike the taste of these keto shakes – mostly dependent upon how sweet they like their food/drinks.
Let’s take a look at what the specific reviews say…
- Shakes taste great and are easy to mix in the blender
- Love the birthday cake flavor shakes
- They have a really bad, awful aftertaste
- The powder didn’t mix well into cold water – the texture was too thick
- The shakes are way too sweet, therefore hard to swallow
One of the main reasons that some people don’t like the taste of these shakes could be due to the type of sweetener used. Let’s go ahead and dig into the ingredient list to find out what’s in this keto protein shake…
SLIMFAST KETO SHAKE NUTRITION FACTS
At first glance, this keto shake definitely includes some healthier ingredient choices than past SlimFast products, but some other major ingredients are lacking. Does this shake have everything you need to meet your keto diet and weight loss goals? Read on to learn more…
Starting with calories, there are 190 per 2-scoop serving, which isn’t too high, but also isn’t as low as it could be. For weight loss, we always recommend that you keep your keto protein powder around 100 calories per shake serving.
However, you could definitely still use this keto shake for weight loss and on your keto diet – just make sure the other ingredients you add into it don’t cause you to go over your daily calorie goal per meal. We recommend you use a keto calculator to find the ideal number of daily calories and macronutrients you should eat to meet your goals.
Moving onto fat, this is obviously an extremely important aspect of keto protein shakes. Since fat should be 70-75% of your daily calories on keto, you want your keto shake to have at least 15g of fat per serving – exactly what SlimFast keto shakes contain.
As for the type of fat, SlimFast includes an MCT Oil Blend (from palm, coconut and grass-fed butter). Though all three of these ingredients contain beneficial fatty acids that support heart and overall health, coconut and grass-fed butter are better choices than palm oil.
Though palm oil is still good for you, it’s a cheaper ingredient, and the growing demand for this product has led to environmental concerns. In addition, coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, and also contains antiviral properties.
Next up in importance on a ketogenic diet after fat is the amount of protein in each shake. After all, research show that diets that are higher in protein lead to greater weight loss. In addition, it helps keep you satisfied, boosts metabolism and gives you physical and mental energy.
Unfortunately, we think the amount of protein in each SlimFast Keto Shake serving (8g) is too low for a meal replacement shake. In our opinions, the best keto meal replacement shakes will have 15g of protein or more per serving – to help you reach your daily goal for this macronutrient.
As for the type of protein in each SlimFast Keto Shake, there’s a blend of whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and grass-fed collagen peptides. Though these are all nutritious, beneficial options (especially the grass-fed collagen), we prefer a plant-based protein as a meal replacement shake base.
That’s because when it comes to all the things you should get in a well-balanced, healthy meal, plant-based proteins (such as pea, brown rice, hemp and chia) check off all the boxes. In addition, studies show that they are beneficial for muscle-building and greatly assist with weight loss.
In addition, plant-based proteins are often the only option for those who are lactose intolerant and can’t eat dairy. And the SlimFast Keto Shake includes whey protein concentrate – which is the least processed form of whey – and also has the most lactose. Therefore, this shake isn’t suitable for those who are lactose intolerant.
CARBOHYDRATES / FIBER
Moving onto the carb count in each SlimFast Keto Shake, there’s 8g total per serving. In addition to that, there’s no fiber and 3g of a sugar alcohol (erythritol). This brings the net carbs (total carbs minus fiber, minus sugar alcohols) to 5g per serving – which is definitely not as low as some other keto protein shakes.
Typically, we recommend that your keto protein powder have 1-2g of net carbs per serving for weight loss and to help you stay in ketosis. In addition, it’s also very important that a keto shake contain good fiber – and there isn’t any in the SlimFast keto shakes!
Fiber is an essential ingredient in any diet, but especially important on keto because it can help you overcome digestive problems that can happen if you don’t eat enough fruits and veggies. When your shake has enough fiber, you can be sure you get enough of the nutrient, even when you’re on-the-go and living a busy keto lifestyle.
As for the sugar in each SlimFast Keto Shake, there’s less than one gram per serving (with 0g of added sugar) – which is great. But let’s take a look at how this shake gets its sweetness. The shake contains stevia leaf extract and a sugar alcohol (3g of erythritol) – two natural sugar substitutes. Of the two, stevia is our preferred choice because erythritol can sometimes cause digestive issues, such as bloating in some people.
However, the bigger issue in this shake is the ingredient, “dextrose”. This is a simple sugar (and one of the ingredients used to create the artificial sugar, Splenda). The problem with dextrose is that it has a very high glycemic index – so could kick you out of ketosis. For this reason, it’s not considered a keto-friendly sweetener.
Some reviewers expressed their concern over this ingredient, however, SlimFast responded that it’s only used in “very small amounts to help with the stability of the product – not to sweeten it.”
VITAMINS / MINERALS / SUPERFOODS
Another aspect that’s extremely important for keto meal replacement shakes is the vitamin/mineral content. That’s because, since keto requires you to cut out many foods from your diet, these keto shakes can help you get all the nutrients you need to steer clear of deficiencies.
SlimFast meets the meal replacement shake requirements in this area, with 23 vitamins and minerals, fulfilling a good portion of your daily nutrient needs. However, there are not any additional superfood blends or added ingredients for digestive and immune health.
In contrast, our #1 rated shake right now, 310 Shake, has 20 vitamins and minerals, plant-based proteins, a superfood greens blend, and probiotics for advanced gut health.
SLIMFAST KETO SHAKE PRICE
You can find SlimFast Keto Shakes at large retail stores such as Walmart, Target, and Costco, as well as online. On Amazon, SlimFast Keto Meal Replacement Shake goes for $14.97 for a container with 10 servings. Therefore, it’s only $1.50 per serving.
This is a very cheap price for a meal replacement shake, however, if you plan to drink one of these shakes every day, you’ll definitely need to buy in bulk to have enough for the month.
In conclusion, SlimFast Keto Shake is definitely a step up on the health scale from the SlimFast shakes of the past. It contains mostly clean ingredients, and is free from gluten, artificial sweeteners, flavors and colors. However, when it comes to a keto shake, it’s lacking in protein, and has absolutely no fiber – a vital ingredient for satiety and digestive health.
Plus, although it’s low in carbs, at 5g of net carbs, it’s not the most keto-friendly protein powder you can find. Finally, though it has beneficial vitamins and minerals, many found the taste of this shake to be too sweet, and therefore unenjoyable.
