CALORIES

Starting with calories, Huel drinks are extremely high in this area, with 400 calories per shake serving! It’s worth noting that Huel actually mentions on its website that it doesn’t consider the protein powder drink to be a meal replacement shake. And the reason it gives for this is because meal replacement shakes are typically used for weight loss, and Huel drinks do not fit into this category.

On the website, Huel mentions that typically, weight loss shakes are around 200 – 400 calories per serving, whereas Huel shakes are on the higher end (plus more if you add in milk). For this reason, it would be much harder to actually use a Huel shake for weight loss. Could you do it? Potentially, sure. But the tricky part would be if you want to drink the shake with something other than water, or add in other ingredients to make smoothies – the calories would start to add up very quickly.

PROTEIN AMOUNT / TYPE

Moving onto protein, there is 29g of protein per Vanilla Huel shake serving, which definitely is a lot for a healthy lifestyle shake. The protein amount fits in with the Huel formula equation for each shake, which is a macro split of 37:30:30:3 (carbohydrate, protein, fat, fiber).

Although protein is essential on a wholesome diet and also for weight loss (with studies showing that increasing your protein can help you get and stay slim), we still don’t think you need as much as Huel provides. Typical meal replacement shakes contain between 15 – 20g of protein, which is plenty for weight loss – especially since you’ll typically be having more than one shake per day. Plus, they’re easy to digest, and studies show that they’re just as beneficial as whey for helping to build lean muscle and toning your body.

CARBOHYDRATES

Moving onto the carb amount in each shake serving, this is where the highest percentage of the shake calories come from – with each serving being extremely high in carbs. How high? There’s 42g of total carbs per serving!

Though the type of carbs (oats) is definitely a nutritious, high fiber source, many people who are trying to lose weight typically reduce the overall carbs the eat. This is because it’s been shown that high-fat, low-carb diets are very effective for weight loss, (hence the popularity of the keto diet)! You definitely could not drink a Huel shake on any type of low-carb diet.

The good news is that since oats are the main carb source, there is 9g of fiber per shake serving, which is great for your health and weight loss goals. High fiber diets are ideal for proper digestion, bowel health, and increasing satiety to suppress appetite and make better dietary choices.

SUGAR CONTENT

As for the sugar content in each Huel meal replacement shake, this is an area where there are both positives and negatives. On the positive side, there is only 1g of sugar per shake serving – which is great because sugar is the worst ingredient to possibly have in your diet. In addition, it’s one of the biggest contributors to weight gain and obesity.

But on the downside, Huel replaces the sugar with artificial sweetener, Sucralose. In addition, there are also artificial sugars in each shake. In our opinions, these chemical ingredients are not the best option for your health. Studies actually show that artificial sweeteners may be linked to health problems with excess use, including a weakening of your gut health.

In addition, these “fake sugars” may actually cause you to be more hungry, crave real sugar, and eat more calories. Therefore, they might not only impact your wellness, but they also may end up working against your weight loss goals.

FAT CONTENT

Each Huel shake contains 12g of fat per serving, with 10g of it being the healthiest type of fat for you, unsaturated fats. It includes a “balanced amount” of omega-6, omega-3 and monounsaturated fatty acids for heart and overall health. In addition, there is 2g of saturated fat, including from Medium Chain Triglycerides, or MCT Powder from coconut.

MCTs are particularly beneficial for fast energy, providing your brain and body with an instant boost. They’re also highly-nutritious, (since they’re from coconut oil), and provide your body with a number of inflammation fighting fatty acids.

VITAMINS/MINERALS

If you do decide to use Huel shakes as meal replacements, having these nutrients would be essential to replace what you would normally get in healthy, nourishing meals.

On the positive side, Huel does contain nutritious plant-based proteins, good fiber, healthy fats, and 27 essential vitamins and minerals. However, due to the calories, carbs, and artificial sweeteners, you might want to limit the amount of these shakes you drink (especially for weight loss), if you do decide to try them.
